Silicone Care & Hygiene
In tropical climates with high ambient temperatures and humidity, maintaining skin health and silicone liner hygiene is the single most important factor in preventing socket abandonment.
Perspiration inside a non-breathable silicone liner can lead to skin maceration, bacterial folliculitis, contact dermatitis, and loss of suspension grip. Following a simple daily hygiene routine keeps your residual limb resilient, healthy, and odor-free.
Essential Daily Care Guidelines for Nigerian Amputees:
- 1. Daily Liner Washing (Inside-Out): Turn your silicone liner completely inside out every evening. Wash with lukewarm water and a pH-neutral, fragrance-free liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no soap residue remains, and wipe dry with a lint-free towel.
- 2. Residual Limb Skin Hygiene: Wash your residual limb each evening with antibacterial soap. Avoid shaving your stump directly before donning your liner, as micro-abrasions increase folliculitis risks.
- 3. Managing Heat & Perspiration: During hot afternoons, take short liner breaks if possible, dry the residual limb, and re-don. Medical-grade antiperspirants formulated for amputees can significantly reduce sweat accumulation.
- 4. Proper Liner Storage: Never store your silicone liner inside-out or in direct sunlight, as heat degrades the medical-grade polymers and reduces elasticity. Store right-side-out on a liner stand.
"Healthy skin is the foundation of comfortable prosthetic use. A clean liner and dry residual limb guarantee hours of pain-free walking, no matter the weather."
